Rustic DIY Wedding in Austria: Ashley + Miguel

DIY Austria Wedding

Ashley + Miguel met while studying in Australia, he asked her to marry him one day while they were swimming in the Florida ocean, and the adventurous duo have since moved all around the world together, living in Madrid, Vienna, Ecuador, Germany and now Lima, Peru. It was only natural that their wedding be yet another adventure, so Austria – a place where the two had visited together + loved – was a natural choice.

The setting genuinely reminds us of The Sound of Music – think of the classic “The Hills are Alive!” scene – and we just love the images captured by the talented Claire Morgan. When we asked Ashley how she + Miguel made their day about them, she told us, Perhaps because we avoided the obligational invites. We chose to invite only our very closest friends and immediate families, those that have known and greatly supported our relationship for the past 9 years. Not a moment of the day was spent catching up with long lost relatives or getting to know our parents’ friends. Instead we were able to enjoy each other in every moment.

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

Without a doubt the most memorable moment was the hour we took before the ceremony just the two of us. We were dressed and met at the small chapel where we originally wanted to get married (but it only seats 6 people). There we toasted with our favorite whiskey brought by a friend from a small German distillery. That moment alone was very special. Also in the top memorable moments were my father's toast at dinner which was incredibly moving and the surprise fireworks that Miguel had arranged.

Ashley + Miguel exited their ceremony to a classical guitar composition played live by a friend. Then everyone walked from the church up to the alm where an evening of dinner, drinks + merriment awaited.

Our Advice To Those Planning Now

Don't share your plans and ideas with anyone but your partner and perhaps one very trusted friend. The more you share, the more opinions you get and it becomes too overwhelming. We kept everything between ourselves and my sister who was a significant help in the planning process from beginning to end. And again, avoid the obligational invites. We caused a bit of a stir with our families because of that decision, but it was so worth it.
